The “Speed Duels” Format Is Used, Which Is Based On The Original Trading Card Game Rules With Some Tweaks.

A player’s life total is 4,000, there is no Main Phase 2, there are only three zones for monsters and traps instead of five, the player’s Main Deck contains twenty to thirty cards instead of forty to sixty, the player’s Extra Deck contains five cards instead of fifteen (though this number can be increased to eight by completing certain missions), and the player begins with a four-card hand instead of five.

Combat can be further altered by the usage of Skills.

This includes, but is not limited to, disclosing the contents of face-down cards, adding cards to the deck at the beginning of the duel, modifying the player’s starting hand, and raising the stats of monsters.

In a duel, one player wins when the other player either loses all of their life points, runs out of cards, or meets certain other criteria. After a successful battle, players are rewarded with experience and a variety of goodies.

The effects of N and R cards are often lesser than those of SR and UR cards, which are more uncommon. Many popular characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime made appearances in the initial release card pool. The card pool grew to include numerous cards from later Yu-Gi-Oh sets as additional BOXes were added throughout time.

The gameplay at debut was very similar to the original Yu-Gi-Oh anime series because the format did not feature any cards that would support the more current special summoning effects of the original card game, including as Synchro, Xyz, Pendulum, and Link Summoning.
